Unlocking Communication
Through Spelling

”I was completely alone. There was a soul in me no one knew. You cannot imagine the loneliness when no one truly knows you.”
- Will Hansen, Speller
What We Do
New Direction Spelling Center’s mission is to teach nonspeakers, minimal speakers, and unreliable speakers to communicate. Using Spelling to Communicate (S2C) methodology we help nonspeakers with motor and sensory challenges build the purposeful motor skills they need to spell out their thoughts and ideas.
Spelling to Communicate
The majority of autistic individuals have sensory motor impairment that impacts their ability to communicate. Since all communication requires motor Spelling to Communicate (S2C) helps nonspeakers build the purposeful motor skills needed to accurately spell on a letter board as an alternative method of communication (AAC). Nonspeakers begin by pointing purposefully to letters to spell words, progress to spelling out phrases and sentences, and eventually can spell out their thoughts and ideas.
